Planning your wedding can sometimes be overwhelming and stressful, rearranging the table plan time and time again can even send you stir crazy! I sometimes believe this was the entire reason for the idea of a honeymoon! Relax after a year of hard-core wedding planning!

Not only is it a perfect way to start married life, but it’s that post-wedding break, the chance to finally sit back and relax after a year planning the big event, take in everything you created, the people who were with you and the memories you will cherish.

My new husband and I still had not planned our honeymoon after the wedding, we just had no idea where we wanted to go, and usually we would like something active, adventurous and fun. We instead opted for the traditional chill out holiday in the Maldives, as we could not both decide where to start.

This was one of the best holidays we had both ever had, we stayed at the Shangri-La Maldives resort on the Island of Gan. And just wow! When we arrived at the resort, we were treated to a refreshing coconut cocktail and taken on a tour around the island while our room was being arranged.

We were driven through the most beautiful forest of palm trees and white sands, it was total paradise. I have to admit, the Maldives is one place that looks exactly like its pictures and postcards, and you have to pinch yourself!

Our room was utterly breath-taking, sitting on the back of the buggy we were driven off the island, up a wooded ramp that panned out over the island and onto the crystal clear waters where our own private villa was standing. Entering the room we had a free standing marble bathtub to one end and the master bedroom to the other that looked out onto the island and the sea. Our deck gave us stairs directly into the ocean where we could swim and snorkel all day. It was just unbelievable, I cannot even put into words.

Now if you are one, like my husband, who is not a massive fan of the heat, the Maldives is perfect, the air was so clear and clean, there was no humidity, it was the perfect sunbathing weather! Not once did he complain (which is new!) anytime the sun gained momentum on our skin, we would take a refreshing dip in the bluest ocean that you can imagine. We sat there all day, everyday, taking in the dream of our surroundings, ordering room service and cocktails to our water villa while watching the schools of fish pass by our deck! To stop us getting bored there were so many fun activities from snorkelling, diving, dolphin watching, island tours, jet skies’, banana boat, underwater jet engines and more!

The food is to die for! Everything is freshly prepared and so succulent, our favourite place was Dr Ali’s that hosted Chinese and Arabian food where we could order a mezzanine of platters, each dish was unique, creative and incredible delicious. My husband and I both agreed, it was actually the best Chinese we had ever had.

The Shangri-La service does not disappoint, even though the Maldives was your typical honeymoon destination, it is one place I would highly recommend, it is a must see location, an untouched land of luxury and paradise. We are planning to return again next year for another round of relaxation.
